How to Switch from 4G to 5G — Complete Guide
A friend upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy A55 last month, expecting to see that 5G icon immediately. Instead, it stubbornly showed "4G+" for two weeks. Turns out, he needed to change one setting, swap his SIM card, and update his phone's software. None of this was mentioned when he bought the phone. Here's the complete guide.
Step 1: Check if Your Phone Supports 5G
Not all phones have 5G hardware. Quick checks:
- Android: Settings then About Phone. If your phone was sold as 5G in India after 2022, it likely supports it.
- iPhone: iPhone 12 and newer support 5G in India.
- Not sure: Look up your exact model on gsmarena.com and check for n78 band support.
Step 2: Check 5G Coverage in Your Area
Having a 5G phone means nothing without 5G towers nearby.
- Jio: MyJio app, tap "5G Coverage" section
- Airtel: Airtel Thanks app, go to "Explore 5G Plus"
- Quick test: Ask a friend with 5G if they get signal in your area
Step 3: Make Sure Your SIM Card is 5G-Ready
This trips up a lot of people. Older 4G SIM cards (issued before 2022) may not support 5G network registration. Signs your SIM needs a swap:
- Your phone supports 5G, you're in a 5G area, but you only see 4G
- Your SIM card is more than 3 years old
- Your SIM doesn't have the 5G icon when you check in the carrier app
How to swap:
- Jio: Visit any Jio store with your Aadhaar. Free SIM swap. Takes 30 minutes to activate.
- Airtel: Visit Airtel store or request through the Airtel Thanks app. Also free.
- Your number stays the same. Your plan stays the same. Just the SIM card changes.
Step 4: Enable 5G in Phone Settings
Your phone might default to 4G even with 5G hardware. Here's how to enable it:
Samsung
- Settings then Connections
- Mobile Networks
- Network Mode
- Select 5G/LTE/3G/2G (Auto)
iPhone
- Settings then Cellular
- Cellular Data Options
- Voice and Data
- Select 5G Auto (recommended) or 5G On
"5G Auto" intelligently switches between 5G and 4G to balance speed and battery life. "5G On" forces 5G always (drains battery faster).
OnePlus / Xiaomi / Realme
- Settings then Wi-Fi and Network (or SIM and Network)
- SIM 1 or SIM 2 (whichever has your 5G-ready SIM)
- Preferred network type
- Select 5G/4G/3G/2G
Google Pixel
- Settings then Network and Internet
- SIMs then select your SIM
- Preferred network type
- Select 5G
Step 5: Update Your Phone Software
Carrier 5G support often requires a specific software update. Go to Settings then Software Update (or System Update) and install any pending updates. Some phones got 5G enablement through a carrier update that arrived months after the phone launched.
Step 6: Restart Your Phone
After changing network settings and updating software, restart your phone. This forces a fresh network registration and the phone will search for 5G towers.
Troubleshooting
"I did everything but still see 4G"
- Wait 5-10 minutes: Network registration can take time, especially if you just changed settings
- Move outdoors: 5G (especially Airtel's 3500 MHz) may not penetrate your building
- Check coverage again: You might be in a coverage gap. Walk 200-300 meters and check
- Toggle airplane mode: Turn airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, turn off. Forces network re-scan.
"5G keeps dropping to 4G"
Normal. Your phone switches between 5G and 4G based on signal strength. In areas with partial 5G coverage, you'll see frequent switching. This doesn't affect your experience — your phone picks the best available network automatically.
"5G is slow / slower than 4G"
Possible during peak hours (7-10 PM) when 5G towers are congested. Also possible if you're at the edge of 5G coverage and the signal is weak. In these cases, forcing 4G might actually give better speeds. Test both and see what works in your area.
"5G drains my battery"
5G does use more battery than 4G, typically 10-20% more. If battery life is a priority, use "5G Auto" on iPhone or switch to 4G-only when you don't need high speeds (like overnight). The speed benefits of 5G are worth the battery trade-off for most people during the day.
Do You Need a New Plan?
No. Both Jio and Airtel give 5G access on all existing plans. You don't need to "upgrade" your plan to get 5G. Your current recharge works — and you get unlimited 5G data as a bonus.
The entire process — check phone, check coverage, swap SIM if needed, enable 5G, update software — takes under an hour. Most of that time is the SIM swap at the store. Once done, you're on 5G with nothing more to pay.
