eSIM Guide — How to Set Up and Which Carriers Support It

📅 Mar 18, 20267 min read✍️ 5Gs Editorial

Last month I was at the Jio store watching a customer spend 45 minutes getting a physical SIM card. Fill out a form, provide Aadhaar, wait for activation, insert the SIM, restart the phone. Meanwhile, I activated an eSIM on my iPhone in under 3 minutes — from my couch, in my pajamas. The future is here, and it's embedded in your phone's chip.

What Is eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM built into your phone. Instead of a physical card you insert, the carrier profile is downloaded and stored electronically. You can switch carriers, add a second line, or activate a plan without touching a SIM tray.

Key benefits:

  • Instant activation: No store visit, no waiting for delivery
  • Dual SIM without dual slots: Use eSIM + physical SIM for two numbers
  • Travel-friendly: Add a local carrier eSIM when abroad without removing your Indian SIM
  • No damage or loss: Can't lose an eSIM. Can't break the SIM tray.

Which Carriers Support eSIM in India?

Jio eSIM

Status: Fully supported for postpaid and prepaid

Activation methods:

  • MyJio app (easiest)
  • Jio store visit
  • SMS-based activation

Airtel eSIM

  • Airtel Thanks app
  • Airtel store visit
  • IVR call to 121

  • iPhone 15 and 16 US models are eSIM-only (no physical SIM tray)
  • Indian models of iPhone 14, 15, 16 have physical SIM + eSIM
  • Apple Watch Series 3 and newer (cellular models)

Samsung

  • Galaxy S21 and newer (S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series)
  • Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series (all generations)
  • Galaxy A54, A55 (mid-range with eSIM)

How to Activate eSIM: Step by Step

Jio eSIM on iPhone

  1. Open MyJio app
  2. Tap Device Upgrade/eSIM under services
  3. Select Get Jio eSIM
  4. Enter your Jio number and verify with OTP
  5. Follow prompts — the eSIM profile downloads automatically
  6. Go to Settings, Cellular and the new eSIM line will appear
  7. Set it as primary or secondary as needed

Airtel eSIM on iPhone

  1. Open Airtel Thanks app
  2. Go to Manage your account, eSIM
  3. Verify your identity (OTP + Aadhaar-based e-KYC)
  4. A QR code or activation link is generated
  5. On your iPhone, go to Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM
  6. Scan the QR code or use the link
  7. Profile downloads and activates

eSIM on Android

The process is similar:

  1. Contact your carrier (MyJio/Airtel Thanks app or store)
  2. Request eSIM activation — you'll receive a QR code
  3. Go to Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Add eSIM
  4. Scan the QR code
  5. The profile downloads and the new line appears in your settings

Converting Physical SIM to eSIM

Already have a physical Jio or Airtel SIM? Converting to eSIM:

  1. Open the carrier's app
  2. Navigate to eSIM section
  3. Select "Convert to eSIM" or "SIM Swap to eSIM"
  4. Complete verification (OTP, e-KYC)
  5. Your physical SIM deactivates and the eSIM activates
  6. Your number stays the same

The process takes 10-30 minutes. Your phone may temporarily lose network during the switch.

Practical Uses of eSIM

Dual SIM Setup

Keep your main number as eSIM, use the physical SIM slot for a secondary number (work line, data-only plan, etc.)

International Travel

When travelling abroad, buy a local eSIM from services like Airalo or Holafly. Keep your Indian eSIM active for WhatsApp and calls. No need to swap physical SIMs.

Testing Networks

Want to test if Airtel has better 5G in your area? Add an Airtel eSIM without removing your Jio physical SIM. Try it for a month, then decide.

Common Issues

  • "eSIM not supported" error: Your phone model may not support eSIM, or your carrier hasn't enabled it for your plan. Contact customer care.
  • Can't transfer eSIM to new phone: You need to deactivate the eSIM on your old phone and re-activate on the new one. It doesn't transfer automatically during phone setup (unlike physical SIM).
  • eSIM disappeared after reset: Factory resetting your phone removes the eSIM profile. You'll need to re-download it from your carrier.

eSIM is the obvious future — it's more convenient, more flexible, and works flawlessly once set up. If your phone and carrier support it, there's no reason to stick with a physical SIM card.
