BSNL 4G Launch — Everything You Need to Know

📅 Mar 10, 20267 min read✍️ 5Gs Editorial

In a small BSNL exchange in Ambala, Haryana, a technician powered on a TCS-built 4G base station last month — one of thousands going live across India. After years of delays, BSNL's 4G network built entirely on Indian technology is actually happening. But "happening" and "ready to use" are different things.

The Backstory

BSNL has been stuck on 3G while Jio, Airtel, and Vi moved to 4G and then 5G. The government-owned operator lost millions of subscribers as users switched to faster networks. In 2022, the government approved a ₹1.64 lakh crore revival package, with a major component being a 4G network built by TCS in partnership with C-DoT and Tejas Networks — India's first telecom network built entirely with domestic technology.

Current Rollout Status (March 2026)

  • Sites installed: approximately 85,000
  • Sites live and operational: approximately 62,000
  • Strong coverage states: Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, UP East, Gujarat
  • Metro cities: Limited — BSNL doesn't operate in Delhi and Mumbai (MTNL territory)
  • Target completion: 100,000 sites by June 2026

How Does It Actually Perform?

Early user reports and our testing in Kochi and Chandigarh:

  • Download speeds: 15-40 Mbps in areas with good signal
  • Upload speeds: 5-12 Mbps
  • Latency: 30-50 ms
  • Coverage consistency: Strong near towers, drops sharply with distance

Comparable to Jio and Airtel's 4G from 3-4 years ago. Decent for YouTube, WhatsApp video calls, Instagram — but not matching current Jio/Airtel 4G (60-80 Mbps) or 5G.

BSNL 4G Plans

Pricing is BSNL's strongest weapon:

  • ₹107 (28 days): 1 GB/day, unlimited calls — cheapest daily data plan in India
  • ₹197 (30 days): 2 GB/day, unlimited calls, 100 SMS/day
  • ₹247 (30 days): 2.5 GB/day + free BSNL-to-BSNL calls
  • ₹397 (30 days): 3 GB/day, unlimited calls to all networks
  • ₹2,399 (365 days): 2 GB/day for a full year — works out to ₹6.57/day

That annual plan at ₹2,399 is remarkable. No private operator offers a full-year unlimited calling plan with 2 GB/day at that price.

Where BSNL Still Makes Sense

  • Rural coverage: BSNL has towers in remote areas where Jio and Airtel have weak signal
  • Government mandate: Required to provide coverage in commercially unviable areas
  • Landline + broadband bundle: BSNL Fiber starts at ₹449/month for 30 Mbps unlimited
  • Annual plans: The ₹2,399 yearly plan has no private equivalent

Should You Switch to BSNL 4G?

For most urban users, no. If you have Jio or Airtel 5G, BSNL's 4G is a significant downgrade. But for specific cases — secondary SIM for cheap calls, rural areas, elderly family members who need simple plans, or budget-conscious users — BSNL fills a gap.

As for BSNL 5G? Realistically 2-3 years away. The immediate priority is getting 4G to work reliably. Give BSNL another 6-12 months of optimization before considering it as your primary network.
