Is 5G Worth It? Real-World Speed Tests
Confession: I've been on 5G for 18 months and most days, I can't tell the difference from 4G. Instagram loads the same. WhatsApp calls sound the same. So is all this 5G hype just marketing? We decided to measure it properly.
We took a Samsung Galaxy S25 in Bangalore, forced one SIM to 4G-only and kept the other on 5G, then ran identical tasks on both.
Test 1: App Downloads
Downloading BGMI (2.8 GB) from Play Store:
- 5G (Jio): 1 minute 42 seconds
- 4G (Jio): 8 minutes 15 seconds
Downloading a Netflix movie (1.2 GB, HD):
- 5G: 38 seconds
- 4G: 3 minutes 50 seconds
Verdict: This is where 5G shines. Large downloads are 4-5x faster.
Test 2: Video Streaming
Playing a 4K video on YouTube:
- 5G: Started in 0.8 seconds, zero buffering in 10 minutes
- 4G: Started in 1.5 seconds, zero buffering in 10 minutes
Verdict: Barely noticeable. Both handle streaming fine because video apps buffer ahead.
Test 3: Video Calls
Google Meet call (1080p, 30 minutes):
- 5G: Consistent HD, no drops, 12 ms latency
- 4G: Occasional resolution dips, 38 ms latency
Verdict: Google Meet and Zoom benefit from 5G's lower latency, especially in group calls.
Test 4: Mobile Gaming
BGMI ā 10 matches:
- 5G average ping: 12 ms
- 4G average ping: 42 ms
- 5G packet loss: 0.1%
- 4G packet loss: 0.8%
Verdict: The 30 ms difference is noticeable in competitive shooters. Smoother hit registration, less rubber-banding.
Test 5: Cloud Backup
Uploading 5 GB of photos to Google Photos:
- 5G: 6 minutes 30 seconds
- 4G: 28 minutes
Verdict: Upload speed difference is massive. 5G upload speeds (50-80 Mbps) vs 4G (8-15 Mbps).
Test 6: Social Media
Posting a 90-second reel (280 MB file):
- 5G: Uploaded in 22 seconds
- 4G: Uploaded in 1 minute 45 seconds
Verdict: Content creators benefit more than content consumers.
The Data Advantage
Beyond speed, there's a practical benefit: both Jio and Airtel offer unlimited 5G data on all plans. On a ā¹189 Jio plan, you get unlimited data on 5G ā no daily caps. On 4G, the same plan caps you at 2 GB/day.
So, Is 5G Worth It?
Yes, if you:
- Download large files, games, or movies regularly
- Play competitive online games
- Create and upload content
- Take frequent video calls for work
- Want unlimited data without daily caps
Not really, if you:
- Mostly browse, chat, and watch occasional videos
- Are in an area with good 4G speeds (50+ Mbps)
- Would need to buy a new phone just for 5G
Don't buy a 5G phone solely for 5G. But if you're buying a new phone anyway, get one with 5G ā the unlimited data benefit alone justifies it.
